a time of change
A few months ago I wrote about some big decisions that Eddy and I would be making and I asked for your prayers. Today I want to update you on what has happened since then. In February, my parents came down to visit. They stayed with me for a couple days and got to know Eddy's family, they worshipped with us on Sunday, and they brought a group down who showered blessings on our ministry here. My parents were also able to come with me into the classrooms and see me interact with the kids and see what our school is all about. By the end of their time here, I think that they understood why I would choose a life here with Eddy working for God's kingdom at this school and church. By the end of their time here we also received their blessing to get married. Eddy and my dad had "the talk" and Eddy proposed to me on Valentine's Day.
Eddy and I both feel strongly that God is calling us to continue working in the ministry here in Santiago. The school, that started with 18 children a few years ago, is growing so fast and continues to grow every year. This year we have around 250 students. We now have work teams and other groups coming regularly to help the school, more and more people are getting involved in the states, and there is a huge need for people here to help build the school up, get it organized and running smoothly and help make it be what God wants it to be.
Eddy and I have been meeting with Guille and Shelley and also talked to my mission organization about the two of us forming a team with them and working together to help this ministry and the people here grow closer to God. I am in the process of changing my status from temporary to permanent, and Eddy is in the process of being accepted as a permanent missionary with Global as well. We are so excited about what God has planned for us, for Guille and Shelley, and for the church and school here.
We will be getting married on August 13. So we are also busy planning a wedding, fixing up an apartment to live in, preparing for marriage, figuring out residency and visa options, and preparing for our new roles in this ministry. We are both taking on more administrative roles at the school and Eddy is taking on more responsibilities at the church.

The New Year
So many things have been going on that don't really know where to start. I was blessed to be able to go home for two weeks to spend Christmas and the New Year with my family. The time flew by and before I knew it, I was back in the DR. A few days after I got back, Katie Copeland, arrived for a visit. You might remember that Katie was here last spring for about five weeks. She stayed with me in my first apartment and she helped me figure out the new country I was living in and learn spanish. She also played a big part in me and Eddy becoming close friends. This was the first time that we had seen her since then. Needless to say, things had changed a lot since the last time she was here. She stayed with me this time as well, but this time the accomodations were a little bit different. Last time I was living in a very nice apartment, comparable to where I would live in the states. This time she got the real dominican experience, complete with cockroaches, ice-cold showers, and mosquito nets. But also filled with lots of talking, singing, dancing, eating, and visiting relatives. She even had all the aunts try to set her up with Eddy's cousin Eddy, which was very fun for me and Eddy but maybe a little embarrassing for her.
A few days after Katie arrived, a work team from Canada arrived as well, led by my pastor and his wife from my home church in South Holland. They were great. I had a such a great time getting to know them and working with them. They were here for nine days and got so much accomplished. It was so exciting and encouraging to see how God brought everything together to accomplish His will through this group. They successfully built three new classrooms on top of the first three classrooms that we have been using since September. The kids will be starting class in the new classrooms tomorrow. By the time they left, they had become such a part of the family here that it was very difficult to say goodbye.
But it doesn't end there. I have a lot of things to look forward to over the next few months as well. Next Thursday, my parents will arrive and my two worlds will finally collide. Two days after that, the rest of their team will get here to visit the school, see what's happening in our mission, and shower us with gifts and blessings. Before that group even heads back to the states, another work team of 25 people from Crown Point will arrive to do a week of construction. We are very busy getting everything ready for these two groups, as well as keeping the school running. When the Crown Point group leaves, we will need to start getting ready for the Illiana group. This is the second year that they will be coming down over their spring break.

the future
When I decided to come to the Dominican Republic, I dedicated myselef to 18 months, and decided that when the time came I would decide whether or not I would stay longer. Well, the time is coming. I am approaching the one-year mark and it's time to start making some decisions. However, for the first time in my life the decisions that I am making are long-term. Up until now, I only committed to things a year at a time. As a teacher, each summer I signed a contract with a school for one year, knowing that after that one year, I could change my mind. Each summer I also signed a one-year contract for my apartment. I think once I had to sign a two-year contract for my cell phone and it was a little bit stressful :). I lived my life a year at a time, I wasn't tied down to anything. Which is why it was possible for me to to pick up and move to the Dominican Republic within three months with relative ease.
However, over the past year, God has built a life for me here that is full of commitments and responsibilities. And now it is time to start searching out what God's plan is for me and which path I will choose. I would be easy to just let it happen but I want to be active in the decision. I don't want to wake up one day and wonder how I ended up here, I want to think it all through, look at all sides, know that God is leading me, and be actively and wholeheartedly following Him.
The first area in which I am seeking God's guidance is in my relationship with Eddy. I have meantioned him in this blog before but I have never talked too much about him, because what I have found is that once you meantion the boyfriend, that is what everybody wants to talk about and hear about and I didn't want to be distracted from talking about the more important things. He is not the reason that I am here, I am here to work for God's kingdom. However, he is a big part of my life down here. Eddy has been actively involved in the church and the school down here for several years. I believe that God put Eddy in my life to help me so that I had the support that I needed to do the work that God has called me to do here. I hope that my presence in Eddy's life is also one of support and encouragement as he works for God's kingdom as well. Eddy has been a major part of my life, first as a friend and then later as a boyfriend, for almost the entire time that I have been here. He has supported, encouraged, and prayed with me through all the ups and downs of the last year. He is a wonderful Christian man. He would be a great spiritual leader. I would appreciate your prayers as we continue to seek God's will for us.
The second thing that we need to figure out is what God's plan is for us in this mission. If we stay a part of this church and school we will be taking on more and more resposibilities. We would be committing the next several years of our lives to this mission. That is not to say that we could never leave, I am sure God has lots of twists and turns ahead for us, but we could not easily just pick up and leave. We are starting the process of meeting with Guille and Shelley, talking to my mission organization, and seeking out God's will to see if we are meant to be a part of this mission. We are excited to see if God will start opening doors or shutting them, and if He shuts them we will need to start searching for a different mission or a different path.
God has been revealing His will for my future to me for the past several month and I am starting to see it clearly. I can see a life here with Eddy by my side, forming a team with Guille and Shelley and helping them build a church and school that honors God and teaches the love of Christ. I know that it would be difficult, we would not have any money, sometimes not even for the necessities, we would be constantly attacked by the enemy who does not want this school or church to succeed, I would continue to be seperated from my family and my home and would continue to struggle with loneliness and the frustrations that come with living in a much differant culture (filled with bugs, ice cold showers, and no electricity). But I also know that despite all of the difficulties, it would be filled with the joy. The joy that comes with knowing that you are working for God's kingdom and that you are following God's will for you.
I believe that this is God's will for us, but there is so much to work out. What Eddy and I would be called to do is so difficult. Actually, saying that it is impossible would be more accurate. But we also know that nothing is impossible with God, and that if we were to succeed in our calling it would only be because of God. We know that if this is God's will for us, He will open the doors that need to be opened, open the hearts and ears of the people who need to hear, and give us the strength that we need to continue. Please pray for me and Eddy as well as Guille and Shelley as we search out what God's will is for this mission.

Things I've learned about myself since moving to the DR part 3

14. When speaking English, I now have to translate in my head from Spanish to English.

Update
I have about 20 minutes until my last English class for the week and I need a break from grading papers, so I thought I would use this time to write a quick update on what has been going on here.
Things are pretty crazy around here right now. We recently had the land around our school leveled and it looks so much better, is much more functional, and is much safer for the kids. It's very exciting to see progress being made. We are ending our first trimester in the elementary school, so teachers are busy assessing and compling grades. Since I'm the English teacher, I also have been trying to finish all of my assessments and grades. We also have our preschool Christmas programs next week and our elementary Christmas program the following week. We have lots of planning and practicing and decorating to do. Because I am going home for two weeks for Christmas, I have also been busy trying to get everything ready for January for the preschool teachers.
January and February will be very busy as well. We are very excited that in those two months we will be having three groups come down to visit, two of which will be doing construction on the school. My friend Katie will be coming down to visit as well. January and February will be two very fun, productive, and exhausting months and I can't wait. But in the mean time we have a lot of prep work to do.
I will be heading to Chicago to spend Christmas with my family in two weeks, and along with all of the work that I have to finish for the school, I also have to get everything ready for my trip and celebrate Christmas with my friends and family here. I am a part of our school's 'angelitos' which is like a secret santa but with a much better name. (It means little angels). We will be having our school Christmas party next Saturday night and next Sunday night Eddy's family is throwing me a "fiesta de Carolina" since I will not be here for Christmas or New Years and won't be able to attend the family parties. I am very excited about this but also very nervous because my first big Dominican family party that I will be attending is also being thrown specifically for me. I'm feeling the pressure :)
