Missionaries serving in:
Santiago, Dominican Republic

“…Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.”  Colossians 4:17

Greetings from the Dominican Republic!  Blessing to you and your families!  Six months have passed since we made the transition to “Sharing the Vision” so we decided to write you all to update you on what we have been up to over the last six months

STV Property
First we would like to thank you all for your continued support and prayers as we follow God down this new path in ministry.  Eddy remains confident in his call to one day be a pastor.  Our working with Sharing the Vision is one step in that direction.  We are working side by side with Jim and Teresa White on a daily basis, serving with them and helping with the mission work that they are currently doing in the DR.  We are also receiving invaluable church leadership training from them, which will help us down the road when God calls us to a church.

Sharing the Vision (STV)

Jim and Teresa
We would like to give you a little background information on Sharing the Vision and their ministry.  Sharing the Vision is a ministry founded by a missionary couple named Jim and Teresa White.  Their mission statement is evangelism and making disciples. There are a few different branches to their ministry.  The first is the church.  Jim and Teresa planted a church called International Christian Church (ICC) five years ago.

Jim is the pastor of the church and Teresa is the worship leader.  The church has many of its own ministries and outreaches as well.

Mission Team House
Along with their church ministry, Sharing the Vision also has a very large team ministry.  They host several teams from all over the US every year. Additionally, they believe in partnering with and mentoring the leaders of other ministries that are doing good work in the DR, especially nationals that have started their own ministries.  A future goal of Sharing the Vision is to build a discipleship training center, where people who feel called to missions can come and receive discipleship training before being placed on the mission field.  They hope to break ground on the first stage of the school this fall.

Eddy and I have been attending ICC (church) for almost two years.  So we were already very familiar with the church ministry and had been involved in some of the church’s ministries before transitioning to Sharing the Vision.  However, since January we have become much more involved in all areas of the ministry.  What has kept us the busiest, however, is the team ministry.

Team Ministry

Jacobe Team

We hosted four teams between the months of January and April.   The first team was the Jacobe team, they along with two other men spent several days in January working on the construction of the new mission house on the STV property in order to help be prepared for the teams who would arrive later in the month.
We then hosted two teams, which were more “typical” STV teams.  These team visited and ministered to all of the ministries that we partner with as well as ICC (our church) and its children’s ministry.  In January we hosted the Remnant Team, a small team from Indiana, and then in March, we hosted a large team from New Castle, IN.  Both of these churches have sent teams in the past and we look forward their future teams visiting again.

The Remnant Team
A typical STV team stays for about 10 days.  One difference from the teams we have hosted in the past is that they are not usually focused on construction.  Although each team does spend a couple days helping at the STV property working on projects, they are mostly focused on ministry.  Often teams have pastors as part of their team and they preach in different churches in the community that we have relationships with.  They also spend a day visiting and blessing each of the different ministries that we partner with and mentor.

We also hosted a team called “The Grannies on a Mission”.  This was a team that was very special to me beccause my mom helped oraginze it.  They stayed with us the whole week and attended church with us both Sundays.  They spent a few days helping at Pathway to Jesus School.  They then spent a few days serving Sharing the Vision, our neighbors, and a couple of the ministries that we partner with.

New Castle Team
Ministries We Partner With

Corinthians 3:9 “For we are all fellow workers, laborers together, with and for God…”

Hogar Infantil Visitación de Jesús is an orphanage in Santiago that we have partnered with for a few years.  They have 16 children ages 3 to 16.  Some of the children have special needs.  Our teams bless the orphanage with groceries and pizza for the kids.  They also plan an activity to do with the kids and will sometimes do a project such as building a swing set or any other small project that needs to be done around the house.

Team Meeting
New Hope Academy is a school and home for girls.  Their mission statement is “Dreaming for the girls in the barrio the same dreams we have for our own daughters.”  We bring the women of each team to have a tour of the ministry and pray for the girls.  Some teams choose to bless the ministry by bringing down items that they need or providing money for new uniforms.   Some of our teams have planned activities and lessons to do with the girls as well.  For example, the Granny team did an art project and a baking class with the girls.

A young Dominican couple in the capital have started a street outreach ministry in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the DR as well as a prison ministry.  We bring our teams down to the capital to participate in an outreach in that neighborhood and the men of the team spend a morning in the prison ministering to the prisoners there.

Grannies on a Mission
A Haitian couple in the capital have planted a church (in Creole) that we partner with as well.  Our teams attend a worship service at their church and lead a VBS for the children of their church and the surrounding neighborhood.

There is a children’s ministry in Haina that we are building a relationship with.  We are very excited about this ministry.  They have a homework club, in which children of the neighborhood come to receive academic help.  They spend half the time doing homework and the other half receiving a Bible class.  Our teams come and lead a fun, VBS type activity for all of the kids.

At ICC, we have a very large children’s ministry.  Every week a bus goes and picks up a bus full of kids bring them to attend our worship service.  They worship with us and then we have children’s church for them during the sermon.  Our teams often plan the lessons for children’s church and also lead a VBS for the kids as well.

ICC Praise Team, Outdoor Service, Monte Adentro
ICC

ICC is a very diverse church.  We have members that are originally from the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the United States, and Brazil.  We worship every week in Spanish, English, and Creole (the language spoken in Haiti) and all of the sermons are translated into Spanish or English as needed.  Eddy and I have been very active in the church for a while, but in the last year have gotten even more involved.

ICC kids
Eddy and I both have been involved in the different outreaches and ministries at ICC. The ministry that I am the most involved with at the church is in the leadership of the children’s ministry.  Eddy is a part of the praise team and has led worship on some occasions.  He has also been a children’s church teacher about a year.  This summer he was elected onto the consistory of the church.  He is also starting a community Bible Study in Monte Adentro (a neighborhood in which our church is focused on reaching and where most of the children of our children’s ministry are from).  Eddy and I have also just accepted the church’s request that we take over the Children’s Church ministry completely and have been named Directors of the Children’s Ministry.

Our work with Sharing the Vision

Apart from the work that we do at the church, Eddy and I both help prepare for and host teams.  We love hosting teams and look forward to the times when we have teams here visiting.

ICC kids
Along with helping with teams, on a daily basis, Eddy helps oversee the STV property, the workers and the maintenance.  There is always construction, improvement, and projects going on at the property that Jim needs help with.  In addition to this, Eddy is receiving pastoral training from Jim as well.  He is also starting his theology and English classes within the next couple of weeks.

I (Carrie) have stepped into a few different roles in STV.  I help Teresa plan for and communicate with teams that we will be hosting (creating schedules, planning menus, creating budgets, etc.)  I have also been given the responsibility of communicating with and fostering our relationship with several of the different ministries that we partner with.  Additionally, I have been helping with the administration of the ministry in the area of finances and I am being trained in the accounting of the ministry.  I also help with the management of the mission house.

Our Visit to the States
Eddy
Early this summer, Eddy and I had to take an unexpected trip to the states.  This trip was necessary for two reasons.  Eddy and I have been working on my residency and nationalization process here in the DR for about a year.  In May, we found out from our lawyer that the immigration laws had changed and that we had to travel to the United States to complete a visa process in the Dominican consulate there, before returning to the DR and continuing the residency process here.  She also told us that this process should be done before July 1.  Since the process takes several weeks, we needed to plan to arrive in the states by the end of May.  Additionally, I had been having some medical issues and around that same time had found out that I needed to surgery to have my gallbladder removed.  So we planned that surgery for while we were in the states as well.

The process for my visa ended up being a lot more work and taking much longer than we originally thought that it would, however, in the end, we successfully completed the process in the states and are now continuing the process here in the DR.  My surgery also went well and had no complications.  We appreciate your prayers as we continue my residency process in the DR and as we do some fundraising as the surgery and immigration process has presented some unplanned costs.

Young Leaders Activity at our house
Since our trip was planned at the last minute and we didn’t know what the surgery and recovery and visa process would look like; we were not able to organize or plan church presentations or meetings.  We apologize if we were not able to see you while we were in town, but we look forward to presenting in your churches as well as updating you all in person on our next trip to the states.

Looking Forward

Please keep us in your prayers over the next few months.  We will be hosting two more mission teams in August and another in December.  Eddy will also be starting his theology and English classes in August as well.  He is looking forward to continuing his education and his efforts to be well prepared and trained for his calling.

Thank you for taking the time to read our update, for your interest in our mission work, and for your prayers and support.  We plan on sending another update at the end of the year, so keep an eye out for that around Christmas.  In the meantime, I do update my blog pretty regularly with “Glimpses into our Life” so if you can’t wait until Christmas for another update, please feel free to check out our blog.  www.pathwaytojesus-carrie.blogspot.com  Dios les bendiga!

“ And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” Isaiah 6:8

Blessings,

Back to Blogging

Hi Everyone,

It has been a while since my last update.  I'm sorry about that.  The last few months, things have been a little crazy.  Here's a rundown of what happened since my last post on April 28:

We found out that we needed to take a trip to the states due to immigration issues (mine not Eddy's).  We had not planned on traveling to the states until the end of the year.
We planned a necessary, last minute trip to the states.
We traveled to the states.
I had surgery to have my gall bladder removed while there.
We had to stay in the states for much longer than we planned because we ran into issues with my visa and could not return until it came through.
We returned to the DR.
We have continued my immigration process and have run into more issues (please join us in prayer about this as my visa expires in about a week and my paperwork is delayed).
We have prepared for and hosted two teams back to back.
Our second team left on Monday.

Now that we are back in the DR and are wrapping up team season, we will be on a more normal schedule and I hope to be updating the blog more regularly with more glimpses into our life and blog posts about how God has been at work in our lives.

Thank you for your prayers and your support and your interest.  I am thankful for all of you.

Glimpse into our life - Dominican Sledding

A few weeks ago, we had a retreat at the STV property for the young leaders of our church.  We studied the Bible, we spent time in prayer, and we had several long meetings.  However, we also had great food and a lot of fun.  One afternoon, the guys decided to give "Dominican sledding" a try.  After watching the video, you will  not be surprised to find out that they were all in some pain that evening.

Glimpse into Our Life - Team Season

Eddy and I started working with Sharing the Vision on January 1.  Here in the DR January is the beginning of what missionaries call "team season".  It's the time of the year when most teams plan their mission trips.  January through March were full of teams and visitors.

This the Jacobe team. They came down for seven days in the first week of January to help with construction on the STV property.  Along with these four men two other friends of Jim and Teresa came down to help with construction as well.  Mick for a week and Kerry for two and half weeks.

This is a picture of the Remnant team.  They were here with us from January 26 to February 3.

The is the New Castle team.  They were here from February 16 to 27.

The day after the New Castle team left, the Grannies arrived.  They were with us from February 28 to March 10.
My mom organized the Granny Team and my Dad came down half way through the week.  After the Grannies left, they stayed for a few more days to spend some time with us.

Along with all of these teams and visitors that we hosted.  We also were thankful for the opportunity to visit with and spend a little time with both of the teams that came to help out at Pathway to Jesus.  There were several people on each team that we knew from hosting previous teams during our time at the school.

The Crown Point team visited in February.

The Illiana team was here the first week in April.
It's been a busy few months.  We were so blessed during this team season by the people who came down and the work that they did for the kingdom while they were here.  It is such a blessing when people choose to travel here from the states and partner with us in the work that God has called us to here in the DR.

Glimpse into our life - our home #2

 Our Home #2

Our apartment is very small.  It is just big enough for two people.  The whole apartment is about the size of the average living room/dining room area of a typical house in the states.  Our house if a very typical Dominican home.  It is built completely out of cement.  All of the walls are made out of cinderblocks and then covered with cement to look smooth.  It is also very typcially Dominican in that it is basically just a cement cube divided into rooms.  There are no closets or pantries.

Many Dominican homes have tin roofs, in which case the walls don't meet the roof.  This causes a lot of problems with mosquitos and other bugs and critters.  We are fortunate to have a cement ceiling/roof on our house that helps protect from unwanted creepy crawly things.

We have rearraged our space several different ways trying to maximize the space that we have.  These pictures show our currect set up. (Update: Actually this post was written a few months ago and since then we have switched things up again.  Oh well, it's still worth posting.)

This picture is taken from our front door.  We are looking through the dining room and into the kitchen.  The cabinets that you see over the counter are brand new.  Eddy just put those up to help with storage.

This is our kitchen.  The picture is taken from the doorway on the right in the last picture.

This is our bathroom.  We managed to get a bathtub, toilet, and sink into a very small space.  Sidenote: the bathroom door is the only door in our apartment.  The other spaces are seperated by curtains because there is no room for doors.

This is our bedroom.  This is taken from the doorway of the bedroom.  The foot of the bed almost touches the wall.

Our "mud room"
This room is technically "Eddy's office" but is pretty much a catch all for everything else.  It is our closet (the white thing on the right is a wardrobe with all of our clothes.  It is our living room (see the tv on the left) and it is our office.

Glimpse into our life - our home

Hi Everyone!  Back in January, I posted our annual update that explained about the transition that Eddy and I made at the beginning of this year.  Since then, we have been very busy preparing for and hosting teams and receiving visitors.  Now that things have slowed down a little bit again, I would like to get back to posting glimpses into our life.  I will post some that are recent but I will also go back and share what we have been up to for the last few months.

For now, I will start with two posts that I had written a couple months ago but then forgot to post.  They show some pictures of our house.  Here's the first one (check back tomorrow for the second one):
 Our Home

Our apartment is on the second floor of a building.  For several years, downstairs there was a colmado.  We live on the same property as Eddy's sister Yasmin and her husband and four sons.  The house that you see at the bottom of the stairs is their's.  Here are some pictures of the outside of our house.

In both of these pictures you will notice the bars around our porch and on our windows.  This is necessary to protect us from  theft.

Prayer Letter

Each year, Eddy and I send out a long prayer letter to our supporters that sums up the last year and looks towards the future.  This year, it went out later than normal because we were working out a few details as far as our future plans.  I have copied the letter here so that you all can see it.  (If you did not receive our letter in the mail and would like to receive them in the future, please email me with your address and I will add you to the list.)

Update – November 2014

Eddy and Carrie Ramos

Missionaries

Santiago, Dominican Republic

“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;  the God of my strength, in whom I will trust;”  2 Samuel 22:2-3

Greetings from the Dominican Republic!  Blessing to you and your families!  We consider ourselves privileged to have the calling of serving God’s kingdom in the Dominican Republic.  We love the country and the people.  I am constantly in awe of the beauty of the island and I am fascinated by the culture.  The DR truly is our home and we are blessed to live and serve here.

Over the past year, Eddy and I have continued to serve at Pathway to Jesus School in Santiago.  I have been serving at the school for almost five years and Eddy has been a part of the ministry for over ten years.   We are so thankful for the time that we have had serving at Pathway to Jesus.  We are thankful for the work that we were called to do and we pray that we have been a blessing to the ministry and the people there.  We have also been blessed in our time as well.  God used our positions at the school to help us learn and grow in so many ways.

PATHWAY TO JESUS SCHOOL
2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR

The 2013-2014 School Year was a great year for Pathway to Jesus School.  The children thrived and grew and learned.  They were taught about Jesus and His love for them.  We were thankful for each opportunity that we had to witness and share with our students’ parents and families.  We had spelling bees, and service days, and Christmas programs, and Kindergarten graduations.  We celebrated with them in their accomplishments and guided and corrected them when it was needed.  The staff also grew as a team.  They helped and supported each other and prayed for and leaned on each other as well.

Eddy and I continued in our roles in the administration of the school.  I continued in my role directing the preschool and helping with the organization of the finances and Eddy continued in his role in the general administration of the school and in the area of maintenance.

CONSTRUCTION/WORK TEAMS
CROWN POINT
First Christian Reformed Church of Crown Point sent a work team down in February for the fourth year in a row.  They worked hard laying block and pouring  columns.  They also had a great time playing with the kids at recess and visiting sponsor childrens’ families at their homes.  We had a great time with the Crown Point team and are so thankful for them.

ILLIANA

Illiana Christian High School sent their fifth annual work team of students and teachers over Spring Break of this past school year.  They work hard in a variety of jobs including building tables and desks, finishing the outer wall at the new building, painting several interior and exterior walls, and painting several murals.

We always love hosting the Illiana teams.  It is so great to see how God uses their trips to open their eyes to a new culture and move in their lives.

VISITORS/PARTNERSHIPS

Joy (Gort) Kasper moved down to the school for several months during last year and helped in the area of administration of the elementary school.  She mentored teachers, organized schedules and curriculum, built a new Bible curriculum, helped host the teams, and the list could go on and on.
We are so thankful for her help and for her time.  She was a huge blessing to the school and to us personally as well.

The “Grannies on a Mission” came down on their third annual trip in February.  Karen Hoekstra (my mom) and Ruth Boss have a special place in their hearts for Pathway to Jesus School.  The staff loves when the Grannies come to visit.  They hosted a brunch for the teachers and gave gifts to the staff.  They cleaned and organized.  They also visited their Dominican friends and blessed the school in a variety of ways.

2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR

Pathway to Jesus has started a new school year.  We are now safely beyond the busyness of the beginning of the school year and looking forward to our Christmas programs and activities.
We have two new administrators at the school this year.  Franklin and Yahaira, who were both teachers at the school for a few years before now stepping into administrative roles.  We are thankful for both of them and for their dedication to the school.

A SEASON OF CHANGE

I would now like to share with you how God has been moving in our lives and some decisions that we have made for our future.   For quite a while, God has been working in both of our hearts and preparing us for a possible change.  Additionally, the last time we came to the states (last winter) Eddy spent a lot of his down time praying and in communion with God seeking out direction for his life.  At that time, he needed to decide whether God wanted us to stay in the school as administrators, in which case he would get a degree in administration, or if God was calling him to become a pastor.  By the end of our trip, Eddy was sure that God was indeed calling him to be a pastor.

We’ve spent the last several months seeking God’s direction and figuring out what that means for us and for our ministry.  Ultimately, what God revealed to both of us is that He is leading us down a completely new path.  Although this was a difficult decision for us to make, we know that we need to be obedient to God’s calling.

As we were searching for direction from God, we were also working on preparing the school for our possible absence.  Over the last year or two we have made major strides at the school in administration and organization.  As mentioned in our update, there is now a qualified functioning board that is governing the school.  We also have two new administrators that accepted positions starting this new school year.  We are thankful for what God has been able to accomplish through us at the school over the last few years and we are also confident that He will continue to provide the necessary people to continue the work being done there.

During these months, God was working in our lives in another way as well.  Just over a year ago, the decision was made to suspend services at the church.  So for the last year, Eddy and I have been attending a new church called ICC.  It is lead by a missionary, Jim White.  For those of you who have been on a work team, you will know them as the missionaries who also run the mission house where all of our teams stay.  God has used that church, its leaders, and its members to move in our lives in a big way.  Jim and Teresa have become mentors to us, we have become a part of their church family and we have become involved in some of the church’s ministries as well.  Eddy serves on the praise team, I am the children’s church coordinator, we both are involved in the youth group and the evangelism that they do.

God used our involvement in the church and it’s ministries to confirm to us that this is the type of work that God is calling us to do.

As we were seeking God’s direction in our lives, we both felt God leading us to talk to Jim and Teresa about possibly working alongside them in their ministry called “Sharing the Vision”.  We asked for a meeting with them and they revealed to us that they had also prayed about us working with them as well.

After meeting with them a few times, praying about it, and talking it over with our mission organization, Eddy and I have made the decision that at the end of December, we will be transitioning from Pathway to Jesus to Sharing the Vision.  In fact, we have no doubt that this is what God is calling us to do.

Jim and Teresa White and Sharing the Vision’s mission is evangelism and making disciples.  Their major ministries are the church ministry and the team house ministry.  They have a large team ministry and receive several teams per year.  They do leadership and pastoral training.  They also mentor and support nationals who have ministries in the DR as well.

Eddy and I will be serving in a variety of functions.  We will be helping in leadership roles in the church ministry as well as the team ministry and construction.  Eddy will also be focused on seeking direction in the area of training and education.  Working with Sharing the Vision will give the opportunity to get some real, practical training in the area of church ministry, evangelism and making disciples.  It will also give Eddy the space to seek out the best theological educational opportunities.
Although the decision to make this change after so many years at Pathway to Jesus was difficult, we have such a peace with this decision because we know that God is leading us and we also have faith that He will be with us every step of the way.  We are filled with joy and excitement to see how God will continue to work in our lives and use us for the good of His kingdom.

THANK YOU

Thank you all so much for your interest, for your prayers, and for your support.  We are humbled by the outpouring of love and support that we receive.  We ask that you continue to pray for us in this transition and we will continue to pray for all of you as well.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”  Joshua 1:9

                                                                                                                        Blessings,
